DUW Consultations

Book an Appointment

We offer three ways to make an appointment: online, by phone, or in person.

  1. Online: To set up a session online, visit us at our online scheduler (baylor.mywconline.com/).
  2. By Phone: You can set up a session by calling the CWE at (254) 710-4849.
  3. In Person: Alternately, you can just walk in and see if a consultant is available at that moment. If you need any help registering or making an appointment, simply call the CWE or visit us in Moody.

About In-Person Tutoring

In-person sessions are the most common form of tutoring that the DUW offers. These sessions are structured to give you up to 50 minutes of one-on-one time with a consultant at the CWE's physical location in Moody Library (2nd floor West). The best way to benefit from in-person consultations is to talk with your consultant about what you want to focus on and what your overall goals are for the piece of writing that you’re working on. We encourage you to bring in resources, assignment sheets, research, and ideas so that your consultation will be as productive as possible. Our consultants can offer feedback and instruction no matter where you are in the writing process, from initial brainstorming and analyzing texts all the way to revision and final drafting.

Any student, faculty, or staff member is welcomed to schedule an appointment using our online scheduler (baylor.mywconline.com). Drop-ins are also welcome.

About Video Conferences

Video conferencing is very similar to an in-person session in that you'll have up to 50 minutes to work with your tutor one-on-one; the main difference is that the session is conducted online through the online scheduler or Zoom rather than in-person in the writing center. In a video conference, the writer and the tutor communicate online in real-time. Both parties are able to view the writer's work on screen and communicate through audio, video, and/or text chat. Tutors in video conferences can assist with any writing assignment, at any stage of the writing process. Sometimes writers have a draft to review; other times, writers and consultants discuss ideas, approaches, or the assignment prompt. We ask you to turn your video on if possible, but you may also choose to only use audio or the chat feature if that is more comfortable or convenient for you.

During video conferencing appointments, some writers pull up the piece of writing they want to review on their computer and then share their computer screen with their tutor. You can also upload your work to your appointment slot on our online scheduler so it is accessible to both you and your tutor during your session. Video conferencing session structures can be adapted to suit other needs you may have as well. Like an in-person session, you can bring any stage of your writing to a virtual session, and this session mode can especially helpful for brainstorming, understanding assignment expectations, getting specific feedback, and/or interpreting instructor feedback.

Remember, our goal is to help teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and proofread on your own. We want you to become a better writer by learning how to improve the quality of your writing overall, not just to improve the quality of one specific paper.

About Written Feedback

In a Written Feedback appointment, you upload a copy of your text (essay, paper, resume, thesis, video, etc.) to the online scheduling system (baylor.mywconline.com) for a consultant to review. The consultant spends up to 50 minutes reviewing your draft and then sends back written feedback to you within 48 business hours (Monday-Friday) of the scheduled appointment. The consultant’s feedback will be based on your concerns and priorities, as well as observations they have of your work. It will also include a feedback letter commenting on the overall strengths, areas for improvement, and suggestions for revision. Because a Written Feedback appointment is completed over 50 minutes, the tutor may not get through your entire piece of writing (typically around 4-5 page). Unlike a video conference, written feedback does not take place in real time.

As with any CWE session, the focus of a Written Feedback appointment is on learning. Our goal is to teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and edit on your own. We want you to become a better writer by learning how to improve the quality of your writing overall, while also improving the quality of one specific piece of writing. Consequently, the consultant will not provide line-by-line corrections.

Written feedback sessions are best when you have a full or partial draft. If you need to brainstorm, outline, or talk through your ideas, choose an in-person or video conference appointment.

A Note on Session Types: In-person and video conference sessions offer unique advantages over written feedback in terms of the development of writing and communication skills, real-time interaction, collaboration, immediate feedback, and personalized guidance. They also allow the writer to ask questions, get help on specific writing needs, and practice applying the strategies to their writing in the presence of a consultant. In these ways, they are preferable over written feedback.

To Make a Written Feedback Appointment

  1. Schedule an appointment online here. When booking your appointment online, choose a tutor with "Written Feedback" listed under her name and choose the “Written Feedback” option for your appointment.
  2. When booking your appointment, include the following information under “What would you like to work on today?” so that your consultant has as much information as possible. This is the only time you will be able to share your questions or comments with your tutor, so be as detailed as you can.
    1. Briefly describe the assignment or the context for writing.
    2. Describe what you like most about this draft.
    3. Describe your three main concerns about this assignment/project. The more specific you are in your explanation, the more we can give you targeted feedback to help you revise.
  3. Attach your draft and the assignment prompt or rubric (if applicable) at the bottom of the appointment window. Microsoft word documents (.doc or .docx) are preferred.
  4. Your consultant will upload electronic feedback, and you will receive an email notification when this happens, along with a "Session Note," which gives you information about the consultation. You may also receive your tutor’s feedback letter as an email attachment. If you do not receive feedback via email, or can’t find the email at a later date, you can always access your tutor’s feedback through our online scheduler (baylor.mywconline.com).

You can expect to receive your feedback within 48 business hours from the time of your scheduled appointment (if your appointment is on Friday, your feedback will be posted by the next Tuesday).
