Services and Resources
We offer video, face-to-face, and written feedback consultations. For video and face-to-face consultations, your consultant will spend up to an hour pre-reading your work and preparing feedback and comments. At the time of your appointment, you will meet you consultant either in the library (face-to-face) or online (via Zoom on WCOnline) to discuss your feedback for up to an hour. When you meet, you and your consultant will discuss your work, address your concerns, and walk through their pre-written feedback.
For a written feedback appointment, consultants spend 45 minutes reviewing your work and providing in-text comments on your document and then prepare a summary of their feedback for your review. There is no meeting component for this type of appointment.

We help with any graduate writing for coursework, professional development, and research. Some documents we’ve helped with include dissertation/thesis chapters, articles for publication, conference papers, job or grad school application materials, grant or IRB proposals, and class assignments. We can help with documents at any stage of the writing process, whether you’re just beginning to outline or have a partial or completed draft.
No, but we will teach you to self-edit or self-proofread. One of the questions we get most often is why we don’t proofread at the DGW. The simple answer is that the DGW is a teaching unit, not a proofreading service. Ultimately, our goal is to help you become better writers—to give you the tools to be able to edit, proofread, and revise your own writing. For these reasons, we focus on teaching you self-revising and self-editing/proofreading skills. We will not go through your document and make specific changes regarding grammar, punctuation, or style on the draft itself. We will answer questions about specific problems, identify patterns of repeated grammar issues, and model a correction. We will then invite you to find other similar problems in your own writing. We believe this approach is more beneficial to you in the long-run.
We will help with grammar issues as they arise in your appointment. We will not fix all of your grammar mistakes in your paper for you. Rather, we will identify any frequent patterns we see and show you tips and strategies for correcting them in the future. We are happy to meet with you to discuss writing concepts you’re concerned with even if they are not connected to a specific paper. However, it is often helpful to use a sample of your own writing to talk through these issues.

No, we do not copyedit in the DGW. However, we do keep a list of freelance editors as well as consultants who are willing to copyedit outside of their writing center work. In this case, a consultant would work with you individually to set up the pay rate, determine the workload, and see if this partnership is a good fit. Yes. We provide consultations for group writing projects. We recommend that all group members attend the session if possible, so everyone can be part of the conversation.
By default, we do not send session notes to your professor or advisor unless you request it. If you would like your professor to be notified, please communicate that to your consultant during your session and include their email address when you are setting up the appointment.
Scheduling and Logistics
The DGW is part of the Center for Writing Excellence, which is located on Moody 2nd floor. We also have a DGW office located in the Graduate Research Center in Poage Library. Unless otherwise noted in an email from your consultant, all face-to-face appointments will meet at the DGW office in the Graduate Research Center.

Yes, there is a limit of one appointment per week in order to accommodate all of our clients.
The DGW does not offer same-day appointments. For video and face-to-face appointments, in particular, we require at least 24 hours with your document(s), and they must be uploaded in a timely manner. Written feedback appointments also must be scheduled 24 hours in advance, but you may upload your documents at any time leading up to your appointment.
Yes, you can schedule an appointment before you have a document to upload. Once you have scheduled your appointment on WCOnline, you may access your appointment at a later time to upload your document. However, keep in mind that we must have your document 24 hours in advance of your appointment time or you will be marked a No Show.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so as early as possible through our online scheduling system or by calling us. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel.
No. Due to the nature of our scheduling system, we do not have walk-in options.
Writers often bring their laptops to follow along with their paper; your consultant will upload your feedback right before your appointment so you will have a copy. However, a paper copy of your document is fine as well. *For virtual appointments, you will simply need an internet connection!
We are open during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. We are closed during break periods before each semester begins (August, January, and May). During Summer sessions, we operate with reduced hours and fewer appointment slots available.
